General FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
HOW CAN WE ACHIEVE AN EASY-TO-FOLLOW COLLABORATION ALONG WITH ORTHODESIGNS?
Using the technology of encrypted cloud storing, collaborating with clinics all over the world have never been easier and secure. We will walk you through setting up your digital workstation where we can communicate instantly. On your workstation you can share details important for manufacturing each prosthesis or orthosis such us measuring forms, SOAP notes, clarify the trimlines, upload pictures, X-rays etc. (Get in touch with us for more details info@orthodesignscy.com)
BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE ORDERING AND DELIVERING PROCESS.
After we receive the patient’s scan from the collaborative clinic, we proceed into designing the prosthetic or orthotic device according to the clinical and technical instructions coming from the clinic. After we finish designing the device, we send a 3D preview link where the clinic and patient can preview the device along with the initial scan using cloud 3D rendering technology. (Example: https://a360.co/3U0aXkm)
After the clinic and patient confirms the design, we proceed into 3D printing the device and ship it to you as soon as possible.
IS THE MATERIAL EASY TO WORK WITH COMMON WORKSHOP TOOLS?
Yes! You can use the sanding wheel with any of our 3D printed devices. You can also heat it up and easily change the shape of the device.
WHAT KIND OF DEVICES CAN BE 3D PRINTED AND DESIGNED FOR OUR CLINIC?
We can 3D print Cosmetic Covers, Prosthetic Sockets, Upper Limb Orthoses, Protective Face Masks, Animal Orthoses, and any other custom device you can think of. If you have a unique idea for a device which is not listed in our website, we can work together on designing your new device! We will do whatever is best for your patients. We are currently working on 3D printing AFOs and Spinal braces. (We offer CNC services for AFOs and Spinal braces, contact us for more details)
WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN 3D SCANNING?
-
Good and even lighting
-
Calibrated scanner
-
The subject you are scanning needs to be stay as still as possible
WHAT IF I ONLY WANT A 3D DESIGN OF A BRACE/SOCKET AND NOT TO 3D PRINT IT.
No problem! You can send us the scan of your patient and we can design the cast or final device and send it to you as an STL file. Then you can take over to manufacture the device using your own 3D printer or CNC machine.
WHAT IF I DO NOT OWN A 3D SCANNER?
If you don’t have a 3D scanner, DON’T WORRY! We developed a unique way of capturing your patient’s body part using the technology of photogrammetry. In simple words, all you need is:
-
A smartphone with a functioning camera.
-
An A4 calibration page which you can print with any desktop printer. (We will send you the file to print)
Then, you take a 1-minute video of your patient’s body part and DONE! You send us the video and we take care of the rest!
WE ARE READY TO START WORKING TOGETHER, HOW DO WE START?
First off, send us an email at info@orthodesignscy.com and we will arrange an online video session to explain the process in more detail. After we set up your digital workstation, it’s a matter of sending the scan through email, uploading the info you believe is necessary for manufacturing the device and that’s it! We will design and 3D print your device!
Cosmetic Covers FAQ
WALK ME THROUGH THE PROCESS STARTING FROM SCANNING TO DELIVERY OF A COSMETIC COVER.
First of all, make sure that your patient is with his definitive prosthetic socket and components (as the cover is going to be made specifically for each prosthesis). Using the measuring form, you take some basic measurements from the patient’s prosthesis (Ex. the height of the clamp itself, the distance from the floor to the clamp, location of any valve etc.). Then you proceed with scanning; have the patient standing without shoes and socks, and start scanning both legs. After you finish scanning, send the scan through to our email, upload the measuring forms and pictures (take some pictures of the prosthesis and sound leg, for reference) through the cloud sharing system (contact us for more info) and that’s it! More details can be found through the document below.
HOW DOES THE COVER ATTACHES TO THE PROSTHESIS?
The front cover attaches to the pole of the prosthesis using a clamp and screws. Then the back cover attaches to the front cover using strong magnets. See the “Instructions of use” documentation below for more details.
Prosthetic Sockets FAQ
WHAT SUSPENSION SYSTEM DOES MOST OF YOUR 3D PRINTED SOCKETS USE?
The main suspension method we use is with seal in vacuum. We basically print the socket without an adaptor, plain check socket, you can add your own valve on the side and then glue or screw the adaptor on the socket. Then wrap around the adaptor some fibre glass tape and its ready for testing. Every 3D printed socket is seal proof.
DO YOU SCAN DIRECTLY THE STUMP OF THE PATIENT OR THEIR EXISTING SOCKET?
There are 3 ways to get a 3D printed socket ready for fitting:
-
Scan the patient’s stump with the appropriate liner, mark any areas that need to add pressure or reliefs (build ups) and tell us what amount of reduction you need for your socket. (We can suggest some reductions we tested and succeeded with ourselves!)
-
Scan the existing socket of a patient. This way you can be sure that the new 3D printed socket is going to fit!
-
Scan an already modified plaster cast which we can make a 3D printed socket out of it! This way we can save the scan for future use and produce multiple sockets from the same cast in the future.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN BENEFITS OF USING 3D SCANNING AND 3D PRINTING FOR PROSTHETIC CHECK SOCKETS?
-
Cheaper/Lower cost materials
-
You can have the scan of any socket/stump into your computer which means you will not have to keep any plaster cast for any future use. You will have all the digital models ready for printing!
-
Enhanced patient experience: Let’s say that you will 3D print a check socket for a patient, and the patient is happy with it, the traditional path of getting the laminated socket ready is to get the socket back from the patient, fill it up with plaster, take the cast of the socket (with the risk of not being able to remove the cast without breaking the socket) and then do the lamination. Instead of that, you can simply re-print a second socket, the same as the one the patient has (because we have it as a digital file) and then fill that one up with plaster and proceed with lamination. With this process your patient does not need to come back to clinic for an appointment to give his socket for filling up, instead you will only do a fitting appointment when the lamination socket is ready. Upper Limb Orthoses FAQ
ARE THE ORTHOSES WATERPROOF?
Yes they are!
DO THE ORTHOSES COME WITH STRAPS?
Yes, we can also supply the orthoses with the straps but if you don’t want the straps we can leave it without.
IS THE WAY YOU SCAN ORTHOSES THE SAME PRINCIPLE YOU FOLLOW WITH ALL OTHER DEVICES?
YES! The same principle applies, the only difference is the measurements form. Another important note to take in is the position of the patient while scanning. Its ideal to scan the patient at the position you would like to immobilise/hold the limb.
WHAT IF I CAN NOT ACHIEVE THE DESIRED LIMB POSITION FOR SCANNING?
Don’t worry, we can manipulate the angles of the scan with our designing software. For example, we can change the position of the wrist, fingers, elbow etc.
Insoles FAQ
HOW DO I MAKE AN ORDER?
We provide you with your own custom made order form, which is cloud based and encrypted where you only have access.
HOW CAN I CAPTURE THE SHAPE OF THE FOOT FROM MY PATIENTS?
You have 3 options:
- Pressure scan
- Foam box
- 3D scanner
If you want to learn all the details on how you can use the 3D printed insoles for your patients then contact us at info@orthodesignscy.com
Pets Orthoses and Prostheses FAQ
CAN I SCAN OVER FUR?
No, you can either use an elastic or self-adhesive bandage to contain the fur or trim it.
HOW CAN I SCAN A CAT, DOG ETC?
In general, for scanning you need the subject to be as still as possible, with animals this might be challenging. Sometimes with dogs for example, you can have them sit on the examination bed and scan their legs. With cats on the other hand, is harder to get them to stay still and you might need to use a form of anaesthesia, if you are a vet clinic then this option should be accessible, if not you might need to attend a vet clinic to use anaesthesia.
